A Combined Process and Resource-oriented Approach to Simulation-based Control Architecture for Efficient Development and Maintenance of a Shop Floor Control System

A shop floor control system (SFCS), the central part of a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) system, is responsible for resolving various problems, such as planning and scheduling, task execution, recovery from errors due to the dynamic nature of the shop floor, etc. However, the high cost of SFCS development and maintenance has been recognized as a significant bottleneck in building automated manufacturing systems. Although several methods have been proposed for the effective and efficient implementation of an SFCS, its development and maintenance of an SFCS incur much time and cost. In particular, changes or disturbances in a shop floor, such as changes of resource properties and layout, insertion of new resources, and deletion of existing resources may cause a complete rewriting.
